Cheney Reservoir was constructed by the Bureau of Reclamation. It was finished in 1964.It is mostly for fishing and wildlife management, recreation, flood control. It also is a water supply for the city of Wichita, KS. It encompuses 9,537 acres of water, 5,249 acres of wildlife area, and 1,913 acres of state park.
My family loves to just go out here and BBQ, I take my drone there and just grab pictures, pratice flying. We love going to the west side to use the swimming area just north of the marina. On the west side, the sailing club marina, the North most part of the West side, there is a very large swimming area and it is cool just to sit there and watch the sail boats coming and going.
Cheney Lake is great for channel catfish and white bass. If you are into striped bass or walleye, or crappie and even wipers you will love the fishing at Cheney Lake. There are acomidations for handicap patrons, at the toadstool loop jetty, which has a fishing pier and a brushpile fish attractors for crappie.
The state park is on the south end of Cheney resevoir on either the east or west shore. Cheney resevoir was completed in 1964. There are 223 electric hookup sites with water. There are 22 lanes to launch boats. There are 7 modern 'pit' toilets, nine restrooms with showers and one shelter house with restrooms. There are four trailer dump stations. There are four designated swimming areas. There are group area which can be rented, along with several day use areas. On the east side there is an extremly well stocked marina store. There are covered dock slips available for rent.
